The Gdańsk-based band Klawo is one of the most exciting projects on the contemporary Polish alternative scene, boldly combining funk, jazz, groove, and electronic music into a unique sonic cocktail. Founded in 2019 by students of the Jazz and Stage Music Department at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk, they quickly gained recognition both in Poland and abroad, playing over 60 concerts in 11 countries. If you're looking for tickets to Klawo concerts, it's worth following their tour schedule – the band regularly appears at major festivals and music clubs, offering energetic shows full of improvisation and funky pulsation.
Klawo – musical style
Klawo's music is based on the eclecticism of the 1970s, when funk, soul, fusion, and psychedelia didn't yet know they were separate genres. The band masterfully mixes old-school sounds with post-Dilla jazz, indie, and electronic music, creating a sonic landscape that references both genre classics and outsider songwriters far from the mainstream. For many critics, Klawo represents Poland's answer to the new wave of jazz from Great Britain – their rich arrangements, pulsating funky rhythms, and excellent melodies evoke the most interesting phenomena from the London scene.
A characteristic element of the band's sound is solos on saxophone, synthesizer, and flute, which interweave with strong rhythmic sections and hypnotic bass lines. Their music features influences from jazz fusion and contemporary electronic music, making each track a journey through different decades and genres. Klawo's lyrics, often maintained in a hip-hop convention, balance between biting jokes and intelligent humor, unafraid of satire and absurdity.
The band goes beyond the rigid boundaries of traditional jazz, offering a completely new approach to the genre. Instead of classic jazz quartets, Klawo proposes a six-member lineup where each musician brings their own sensitivity and experience. This is the right way to tap into the niche of the Tri-City jazz scene, which has long needed a fresh perspective and bold sonic experiments.
Their eclectic style means that Klawo concerts attract both jazz fans and lovers of electronic music or funk. This is music that doesn't fit into one box but draws from many sources, creating something truly unique on the Polish music scene.
Key career moments
The band's beginnings date back to the second half of 2019, when Konstanty Kostka was invited to rework his EP "Flądra" with a full live band. The biggest challenge turned out to be finding the right musicians – this process took four months. Eventually, they managed to assemble a lineup that included Alicja Sobstyl, Tomasz Rafalski, Artur Szalsza, Jakub Krzanowski, and Karol Tchórz. After completing the project, the band began composing original material.
The debut album "Klawo" was released on July 13, 2022 by the Tri-City label Coastline Northern Cuts. The album contained 13 tracks maintained in the climate of funk, groove, jazz, and hip-hop. The record was created in collaboration with Tall Pine Records and Ramtamtam Studio, and its cover featured a photograph of the band members taken by Paweł Zanio and Wojtek Słabuszewski. The singles promoting the album were "Wdzięczność," "01.06," and "Tom Kha" – the latter gained particular popularity thanks to a music video shot with an old camera found in a garage.
The debut was met with enthusiastic reception – the album achieved album of the week status on Polish Radio Four. As Jakub Knera wrote for Bandcamp Daily: "Their excellent debut is full of great melodies. At times it brings to mind the young British scene, with its pulsating funky rhythms, and the rich arrangements sound as if taken from the golden era of Polish radio and TV."
In July 2023, the band won first prize in the international Jazz in The Park competition in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, which opened doors for them to perform at major European festivals. A month later, their first live album "Live!" was released, recorded during the Sea You Tricity Music Showcase. Energetic live performances secured Klawo a place in the lineups of events such as the Dutch Eurosonic/Noorderslag, German Fusion Festival, Off Festival, and Męskie Granie.
In 2025, the band released their second studio album "2 bobry i zachód słońca" – an eclectic album full of surprises, resulting from collective work, concert tours, and dozens of hours of playing together. The new material confirmed that Klawo is one of the most promising young acts in contemporary Polish alternative music.
Klawo – concerts
Klawo concerts are a true feast for the senses – full of improvisation, funky pulsation, and rich arrangements that heat up the audience regardless of the venue. The band succeeds equally well in intimate music clubs and on large festival stages. Their performances are characterized by incredible energy and spontaneity – each concert is slightly different because the musicians aren't afraid to experiment and interact with the audience.
Live, Klawo presents even better than on record. Instrumental solos take on a new dimension, and the groove of the rhythm section hypnotizes from the first bars. The band knows how to build tension and lead the audience through different moods – from relaxing jazz passages to explosions of funky energy. These are concerts where it's hard to stand still.
It's worth going to a Klawo performance if you're looking for something more than a standard concert – their show is a full-fledged musical experience that combines virtuosity, great compositions, and authentic passion for playing. The band has already proven they can delight audiences across Europe, and their performances in Poland always attract crowds of good music fans.
